In this first official episode for the project ‘SIEGĦA’, which is being produced in collaboration with NEWZ.mt, we met Gabriel Apap from Solidarjeta’, Malta’s newest trade union.

Gabriel is a bright, young activist who, together with his colleagues, has set out on a difficult quest: the creation of a grassroots-led union which acts as a mediator in the often fraught relationship between landlord and tenant in Malta’s Wild West style property market.

In the interview below, we discussed why he decided to get involved, the union’s perspective on the property market and how it impacts the day-to-day life of workers in the country, the significance of International Workers’ Day in the context of a neoliberal Labour government, and a general overview of what the first two months were like as well as what the union hopes to achieve in the near future.
